One of the biggest challenges for first-time parents is the New baby checklist of all the things you need for the new arrival. If you don’t have any experience it can be a hard and daunting task knowing what’s a necessity and which of the items are a luxury.
From personal experience of buying for 4 children and after spending a large amount of money buying baby gear that was hardly ever used. I thought I’ll write an article to help make the journey a little bit easier and to save you some cash in the process.
I have made a list of all the baby essentials in this article that you will need for your new baby and also some baby items that are handy to have. For your ease, the baby checklist has been categorised into different groups.

Clothing Essentials
- 6-8 sleepsuits/onesies
- 6-8 vests/ short sleeved suits
- 2 baby sleeping bags for a winter baby
- 1-3 sweaters or jackets
- Shawl or snowsuit
- 2-4 rompers or other dress-up outfits
- 5-7 socks or booties (shoes are not necessary until baby walks
- 1-3 hats (summer hat for a summer baby and winter hats for winter babies)
Cot/Cot Bed (essential)
- New Mattress
- 2-4 blankets
- 2-3 fitted sheets
- 2-4 top sheets
- Storage
Travel Essentials
- Car seat
- Pram/travel system (suitable from birth)
- Rain cover for the travel system
Changing Essentials

- 3-4 Nursing bras
- Breast pads
- Breastfeeding cover/large muslin cloth

- Formula (if not expressing breast milk)

- Moses basket/crib (plus mattress, sheets and blankets) I kept one downstairs for daytime naps.
